I
use my radio station remotely perhaps more often than locally. The whole
station is behind mouse clicks. Ham Radio Deluxe as an |
|
user
interface works fine. In my opinion there is too much under the mouse
however. My hand gets tired. Therefore I made this remote head, |
|
which
controls my rotators. The command chain is with Remoterig RRC's via Internet.
There I have a RS232 data channel with 4800baud |
|
speed
to my Yeasu G-100DXA control box. In the box I have installed the Rotorcard
from Idiom Press. This card provides the serial data |
|
capabitity to contol the
rotators. |

This remote head
communicates with the Idiom Press Rotorcard via the Internet link described
above. |

|
|
The command set of
Rotorcard is narrow: request current heading, receive current heading, send
new heading, go and stop. |
|
|
The task is fairly
simple for a PIC, if a ready made serial display is used. I use Picaxe 14M2
processor, which can read directly |
|
|
IBM
PS/2 keyboard. The numpad version is enough for rotator control. I use number
5 as a center point. Number 4 on the left is west, |
|
6 on the right is east,
2 below is south and 8 above is north. Other directions are with the same
logic. |
|
|
|
|
+ -button increases
target by 1deg and - degreases by 1deg. Enter is go and center point 5 is
stop. Stopping is automatic however. |
|
|
Button 5 is needed only
if you want to stop rotation earlier than the target is. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
The
serial display is Picaxe AXE133Y with OLED's. Fixed baud rate is 2400, which
is fast enough here. The top line shows the target |
|
and the bottom line the
current heading. This is updated every 3 sec or so. |
|

Serial communication
goes on TTL-levels to Remoterig COM-port. A perfect RS232 line would have
Maxim MAX232 |
|
|
|
as an interface. That
inverts the signals and therefor serout and serin commands in the code have
to modified accordingly. |
|
|
But this seems to work
fine even without those + / - voltages of
perfect RS232. |
|
|
|
|
